Placing a mooring with the swivel below the buoy is most ideal. Keeping less gear above the buoy prevents excessive wear and tear on the buoy and the swivel functions much more naturally and with ease. Placing a swivel below the ball does cost a negligible amount more by result of needing slightly more chain and another shackle, increasing the total cost slightly.

This method of placing the swivel above the buoy is more material and cost efficient, eliminating the need for one shackle and 1-2ft. of chain. The downsides of this method are that the buoy encounters more stress and abuse from the chain, swivel and shackles as well as somewhat limits its ease of motion while still being effective and not compromising safety.

Mooring Inspections consist of a diver entering the water to inspect the mooring gear, ground tackle and the location and condition of the seabed in that specific location. Everything from the mushrooms anchor or block to the pendant line will be cleaned and checked for wear, rust or structural compromises, shackles will automatically be re-fixed with seizing wire if necessary and video proof sent upon completion.

In preparation with winter our team will clean off and inspect mooring gear before removing everything above the top chain (pendant, ball, shackles, swivel) and add either a winter stick with chain or a buoy with rope before sinking the top and bottom chain for the season. Mooring gear can be returned or stored with Sub Surface Marine Solutions for a storage fee.
