Diesel fuel is easily contaminated by water even becoming emulsified and binding with the diesel, enough of it and it will not burn while damaging engine parts like injectors not meant to handle fluids other than fuel. If there’s a small amount of water the water sits below the diesel and the layer where they meet is a prime nursery for bacteria, microbes and algae known as “diesel bug” which if untreated, can clog pickups and beyond.
